Colorado Life Insurance

In the United States, employers finance health coverage for over 160 million Americans. Recently, the rise in rates for family, individual, and company-provided insurance has exceeded that of inflation. One of the significant costs faced by small businesses in Colorado and across the nation is that of providing health insurance to employees. The U.S. spends more on health care per capita than any other industrialized nation, yet still ranks low on quality.
Despite the soaring cost of company insurance, experts say that overall employers remain relatively passive about health and life insurance. Several industry and government officials are starting to complain that employers are not using their purchasing power to effect change. They argue that companies should more actively seek lower cost, high quality healthcare, and thereby exert important influence on industry rates and standards. However, companies like Intel - which spends almost 1 billion dollars on heath care – have “just been writing checks says the chairman of Intel Corp., Craig Barrett.
As heath care reform has become one of the key topics in the upcoming election, employers’ passive attitude will gain more attention and business heath care costs will likely achieve a higher priority in company agendas.

One of the hottest topics in this year’s presidential election is health care reform and the impact that new policies will have upon health care for small businesses, families, and individuals. Colorado insurance providers and those throughout the nation have varying opinions about how the government should approach health insurance issues and democratic candidates proposals for universal coverage.

Voters across America and throughout Colorado have rated healthcare costs and health insurance coverage as a top priority in the presidential race. Republican candidate John McCain believes that the solution lies in creating greater competition in individual, family, and group health insurance markets. He calls for more choices to be available for individual and family health insurance coverage, and believes that this will help to drive down costs and give individuals more leverage in their decisions.
His stance could have significant impacts upon health insurance for small companies and groups in Colorado, as well as have implications for individual and family Colorado health insurance coverage. The Arizona Senator wants to foster competition in insurance markets by putting individuals in charge of their healthcare and insurance, and consequently reducing the current prevalence of employer based programs.
“Americans need options beyond those covered in employer-based programs. Americans want a system built so that wherever you go and wherever you work, your healthcare plan goes with you said McCain while on a campaign this week to highlight his healthcare proposals.
Under McCain’s plan, individuals would receive a credit of $2,500 and families would receive $5,000. These credits are to be used to purchase insurance coverage independent from their employers; which could be cheaper than that provided through the predominately employer-based health and life insurance system in Colorado and throughout the U.S.A.
Both Democratic candidates have also set important goals that could have major effects for small heath insurance in Colorado. They propose universal health coverage for the 47 million uninsured Americans. McCain would not force anyone to leave their existing employer-based health insurance plan, but hopes that by decreasing reliance on government run programs, and encouraging competition in the market, his plan will drive down health insurance costs to individuals and businesses while ensuring the availability of high quality coverage.

The largest survey ever conducted of American physicians’ thoughts on healthcare financing revealed that nearly sixty percent of U.S. physicians support legislation to establish national health insurance. According to a 2007 survey appearing in the Annals of Internal Medicine, only thirty two percent of physicians oppose national health insurance. Meanwhile, the number of uninsured U.S. citizens has skyrocketed from 2.2 million to 47 million, representing the largest increase since 1992. Recipients of Colorado health and life insurance as well as other recipients across the nation, should be aware that twenty eight percent of the 5,000 physicians surveyed “strongly supported national health insurance and thirty one percent “generally supported it. Only seventeen percent “strongly opposed and fifteen percent “generally opposed a national insurance policy. In the near future, small business, family, and individual insurance may be impacted by this strong demonstration of physician support for a national insurance policy.

Medicare spending is rising rapidly and is likely to have significant impacts on important issues such as taxes and health insurance. In fact, at the current rate of increase Medicare hospital fund outlays are predicted to exceed tax revenues in 2008. Medicare trustees fear that financial depletion will occur around 2019. As the “baby boom generation nears retirement, the program’s ability to support life and health insurance benefits is becoming quite strained.
Time is running out, and the U.S. government is proposing solutions to achieve a much needed financial balance. Consequently, Colorado group and individual health and life insurance recipients, as well as businesses here and across the nation, are likely to see insurance coverage cuts and payroll tax increases in the future. Theses policy changes will have far reaching impacts upon group, individual, and family insurance in Colorado, as well as health and life insurance for companies. Furthermore, Social Security is also suffering from financial imbalance; and it is predicted that by 2017 the program’s expenditure will exceed its revenue.
Forecasts such as these have large implications for Colorado businesses, families, and individuals concerned about their health and life insurance coverage. The impacts of increasing Medicare and Social Security spending will fall largely upon small company, family, and individual health insurance plans. Therefore, the rising cost of providing individual and group insurance coverage will be felt throughout Colorado and the entire country.

Usually, most candidates place importance upon large corporations for they are the “job makers of the country. However, now that the economy is on its head, with the media and economic analysts asserting the imminent coming of a recession, presidential candidates should start pointing their attention toward those that are still afloat in the job making machine—small businesses. Unlike the “Giants or large corporations of the United States, smaller businesses are not falling victim to the need of “downsizing and thus they may very well be the floating device that rescues our economy amidst this economic flood. So now, after the polls have closed from Super Tuesday, the statistics show that the percentages of small business owners voting within this year’s crucial elections have grown significantly. And what is the main concern of small businesses? Business health insurance and group insurance. Business owners statewide, including Colorado business owners, feel that the means for them to ensure that their employees, as well as themselves, are receiving quality healthcare and group insurance will solely be attained through the attention of the presidential candidates to this singular issue.

Only the rest of this year’s campaigning will be able to demonstrate if health insurance and healthcare will top the candidates’ list.

On December 13th, 2007, my partner had to return to his home country The Netherlands, as his mother had a mild stroke. While there he was quite frustrated with the level of care his mother received and the lack of information the doctors had provided him and his family of the projected outcome and lasting effects of his mother’s health following her stroke. When my partner arrived to the hospital many questions loomed in the back of his mind, however, he remained silent for the moment as he was happy that is mother had survived, and assumed that the doctors would soon provide them with the lasting effects the stroke will have on his mother and the path they will undertake towards her recovery. Sadly, a week passed, and yet no one other the than the nurses had provided his mother with any care. At this point, the family was infuriated and demanded to speak with a doctor. The doctor indicated that there would be some brain damage, however, did not yet know the severity, as they had not yet performed an MRI. Finally, a week and a half later, the MRI was performed, and the Physician’s Assistant, not the Doctor, instructed the family that there was brain damage, and they are not sure how this will affect her life and daily activities thereafter. Is that the information that they waited for almost 2 weeks? Was a medical degree necessary for the information that was provided? How could something as grave as a stroke get so little care and attention?

Well, to provide you with a little more information, The Netherlands is a small country in Europe, and most are more familiar with its capital; Amsterdam. The health care in The Netherlands is what you would call “Universal Health Care, all residents must have it, either offered via their employer’s or self, and if they cannot afford it, it is subsidized by the government. While this may seem ideal, it is hardly the case as it seems it highly fails when it pertains to the actual care of the patients and the overall qualifications of the MD’s.
As the 2008 elections approach, it is only inevitable that health insurance in Colorado and the rest of the US may be nearing this sort of health care system. There is no argument that the health insurance industry in Colorado and the rest of this nation is failing, too many are uninsured, and rather than preventing ailments, we treat any little nuisance with medication. Thus our system needs a change, but is Universal care the answer? In order for a change to be successful, we need to ensure that everyone receives the same kind of health care that we currently receive, in the sense that we may continue to choose our own doctors, creating competition between doctors, and the need for doctor’s and specialists to strive to be the best, and reward those that excel in their fields.
Currently in The Netherlands, all MD’s are ultimately paid the same, thus creating a shortage of specialists, a lack of incentive to shine, and truly caring about providing the best care.
Certainly this is not the path that Colorado’s health insurance system should take. A change is necessary, but one that will benefit rather than be a detriment to us all.

Flipping through the news channels you are certainly bound to hear these four letters at least once and their frightening connotation—“the unbeatable bug! Well, how better to beat the unbeatable bug than to narrow down its origin, for as most have learned, if you know the problem, you can solve it! Geneticists and researchers alike, in attempting to understand the means to properly remedy the outbreak of MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), which has increased over the past five years, have made an important discovery: the deadly strain of staph infection roots from a singular, rapidly developing bacterium.

The most daunting aspect of this super bug, resistant to virtually all antibiotics, is the fact that its contraction is no longer isolated to the stark, white halls of a hospital. MRSA, as of late, has become spotted throughout all levels of schooling, prisons, locker rooms and various other unexpected locations, which means the infection is attacking the general public in areas not necessarily prepared to deal with an outbreak.

So, while the scientists are doing their part to isolate the culprit and synthesize ingenious ways to spar with the unbeatable bug, what shall you do? The following recommendations certainly do not fully protect you and your family from the risks of contraction, however these suggestions certainly can help—wash your hands, be it with antibacterial soap or sanitizer and at the first sign of danger, be quick to visit a physician or emergency facility.

And of course, here at Elite Health and Life Insurance Services, we are always happy to help with any of your Colorado health insurance concerns and questions.
