Taking responsibility for your actions is one of the key truths and values that parents worldwide have ardently attempted to instill in their children so as to ensure a better tomorrow.  Well, that is what the US government is trying to advocate in hospitals throughout the country, by implementing a program that will make these respective establishments take responsibility, including that which is fiscal, when a Medicare patient falls ill with “hospital related infections or surgeries gone awry. Thus, hospitals will be forced to pay for these certain instances and will not be permitted to have the patients bear the grunt.

Supporters of this program feel that in doing so they would be forcing hospitals to thoroughly prevent mistakes and synthesize a more efficient environment. However, opponents feel that there is no clear way as to avoid certain instances, such as patients falling in the middle of the night, and placing the responsibility upon the shoulders of the hospital would simply be unfair.

Either way, it goes without saying that hospitals certainly should find a method by which they will adequately be able to prevent mistakes, such as removing the incorrect limb of a patient, if the Medicare cut is the right way, remains to be decided.

Our children hold the promise of our future, it is upon them that we have bestowed all of our generation’s dreams, hopes and aspirations. So then, we should ask ourselves why our government is making it that much more difficult to ensure their health stays intact through the State Children’s Health Insurance program, which was instated in 1997.

The idea was to provide lower income family’s children with the healthcare benefits at decreased costs.  Then, in a bid to further improve the state of children’s healthcare in the United States, the maximum income requirement was increased. Such a move was made so as to allow families that would essentially be considered able to purchase private healthcare, according to the government statistics and analyses, but due to extenuating circumstances found doing so beyond their means, access to healthcare for their children. However, the Bush administration is rejecting the programs suggestion to increase income requirements due to the fact that in doing so, families that do have the income to attain privatized healthcare may refrain from doing so simply in order to get the same quality health insurance at lowered costs. The purpose of the program was to ascertain that the children who were truly in need would finally have the ability to acquire quality and low cost health insurance, thus, Bush has made a compromise on the matter. In order for families of 4 individuals making approximately $55,000 a year to qualify for the program, the state in which they reside must have met 95% of the low-income families’ needs. But, critics fear that while it may be masquerading as a “compromise it is merely a means to reject the increase and prevent families in need of acquiring health insurance for their children.

As of July 1st, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, commenced offering same-sex domestic partner health care benefits, which includes providing health care, dental and vision benefits to employees and their dependents of small group employers. Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield is a subsidiary of WellPoint, Inc., and is the largest health insurance carrier in Colorado, and nationwide.
Thus with anticipation, such ground breaking advancements, will surely trickle down, and other insurance carriers will follow suit. While the future of the health care industry, as we know it, relies heavily upon the impending 2008 elections, this progression will surely award Anthem a few Brownie points.

Governor Bill Ritter traveled to Grand Junction, Colo. on Tuesday, may 29th, to finalize the passage of numerous measures into law, including a bill that would require insurance carriers to provide coverage for a new cervical-cancer vaccine (Ritter Signs Key Bills In Western Colorado, 05/29)

Gardasil and Cervarix, Merck’s and GlaxoSmithKline’s HPV vaccine respectively, proved to be 100% effective in preventing infection with HPV strains 16 and 18, which accounts for 70% of cervical cancer cases. HPV is a sexually transmitted disease that afflicts 2 out of 3 women, and is rendered undetected in men, and causes Cervical Displaysia in women, a precursor to cancer.

This bill further requires that Colorado School girls be given the vaccine by age 12. Sadly, opponents, namely Republicans, to the bill hypothesize that this will encourage sexual promiscuity among female teenagers. It makes me speculate that these individuals that do not support the bill essentially would rather that our women and children be compromised with Cervical Cancer rather than providing education, and a preventative vaccine. Ignorance is not bliss should be the new statement by patients who have suffered circumstances of malpractice at the hands of their physicians.  While in other situations such a statement may apply, such is not the case when your health and potentially life is at stake.
Canada has been enlightened, as of late, and is instating new codes for physicians to adhere to, which includes disclosing information to patients when procedures do not go as planned; i.e., operation upon the incorrect limb, or the leaving of a sponge or any other medical tool within the patients’ bodies. Though most fear that the subsequent consequences of such actions may lead to malpractice suits, according to Wendy Levinson, chair and professor of medicine at the department of medicine at the University of Ontario, finds that in actuality the results are quite the opposite.  Rather than anger rising, patients find themselves being far more sympathetic than expected and quite forgiving, given the circumstances, which eventually lead to a strengthening of the doctor-patient relationship.

Thus, such enlightening news, a bit north of our country, makes me wonder if the disclosure of malpractice could feasibly find its way into the hospitals and physicians’ offices of America.  As noted, ignorance is certainly not bliss and perhaps if we collectively push for change and honesty within our own health administration, there could be a profound alteration of how the system works.
